Obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a form of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy characterized by abnormal thickening of the heart muscle, particularly the interventricular septum, which obstructs blood flow from the left ventricle to the aorta. It is a genetic heart condition and the most common cause of sudden cardiac death in young people and athletes. The term 'obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy' distinguishes it from non-obstructive forms of HCM based on the presence of left ventricular outflow tract obstruction.
